「その執事、掃討」 (Sono Shitsuji, Sōtō)
“His Butler, Mopping Up”
If I needed to summarize this episode in once sentence, it would be as follows: A long-ass recap followed by characters running around and blowing things up in the forest. It’s a horrible shame that they chose to stretch the episodes out with unnecessary recaps and slo-mo pacing right at the end. This is an excellent arc with superb material, it doesn’t deserve to get stretched thin. Better to have cut it a few episodes short or added in some sort of filler than go this route.
What does emerge from the forest is not so much our gang, but tanks. Diedrich tries to warn Ciel that the Germans weren’t stopping at gas- but alas, much too late. Not that that’s a problem with a demon butler, as the tank driver soon discovers. The tank development fits with the turn of the century technology (certainly more so than tracking devices), so that didn’t come as too much of a surprise. The tank added a whole new destructive power to the battlefield, another bloody example that the true devils may, in fact, be humans.
Of course, Sebby makes short work of the tank, leaving it in flaming ruins. Rather convenient for the German side as well, because all evidence of the government’s nasty experiment burns along with the pursuing army. All except Sullivan, that is, who has already made it out of the forest. Naturally that doesn’t sit well with the German conspirators, and Wolfram discovers to his horror that their target is Sullivan. Which, he had to have been fooling himself to think they’d let her off the hook after escaping. This is where Wolfram is going to flip his switch. He’s loyal to the institution, yet loves his little mistress- from his expression, I don’t think he’s going to sit back and let the village have her head.
By this point, we all know what mass deaths mean- Grim Reaper time. The German branch clocks in to swiftly process the new dead (thankfully no Grell). At the same time, they appear extremely interested in the devilish goings on documented by the British branch. The Grim Reapers just can’t seem to leave Sebby and Ciel alone, so I doubt this will be the last we’ll see of them.
With that, we have 2 more episodes left. So help me, if we get two more extended recaps, I’m going to be seriously pissed.
